A good place to start is the Better Business Bureau. This is an organization dedicated to fostering a trustworthy marketplace, and it’s a clearing house for customer feedback. It publishes complaints about specific businesses online, and reports the resolutions of these conflicts: were they resolved? Are they still pending? The BBB also accredits businesses who abide by the BBB’s own policies, procedures and best practices. If your contractor is accredited by the BBB, that goes a long way toward credibility.
Your local attorney general and the labor & industries department of your local government also keeps statistics and information regarding your contractor’s standing in the community it serves. It’s best to use both: remember, the more information, the better!
